Reliance Jio Tariffs: Rs. 50 for 1GB 4G Data, All Voice Calls and Roaming Free
Reliance Jio Tariffs: Rs. 50 for 1GB 4G Data, All Voice Calls and Roaming Free
At
Reliance AGM, Mukesh Ambani finally broke the silence on the tariffs for
Reliance Jio. The company will not be charging for voice calls at all, and it
will charge a tenth of what its competitors are charging for 4G data, Ambani
said – it was announced that Jio will charge only 5 paise per MB, or Rs. 50 per
GB. What’s more, the greater the usage, the lower the cost will be, and the
rates could go down to Rs. 25 per GB.
At
the AGM, Ambani also announced that Jio services will become available from
Monday, September 5, absolutely free for everyone for a month, as part of the
‘Jio welcome offer’, so everyone can try Jio’s services at absolutely no
charge.
“Pay
for only one service – either voice or data, not both,” he said. “World over,
operators charge only for data, voice and messaging are essentially free. All
voice calls for Jio customers will be absolutely free.”
The
Jio 4G tariffs start at Rs. 149 for 28 days, for 300MB. For Rs. 499 per month
you get a big step up, to 4GB of 4G data, plus unlimited 4G at night, for 28
days. You’ll also get 8GB of access from Reliance Jio’s upcoming network of
Wi-Fi hotspots, further increasing the amount of data you can use. For Rs. 999,
that goes up to 10GB of 4G data, and 20GB of Wi-Fi usage, plus unlimited usage
at night. Further plans are for Rs. 1,499 for 20GB, Rs. 2,499 for 35GB, and Rs.
3,999 for 60GB of 4G data, and twice as much Wi-Fi usage respectively. The most
expensive plan is for Rs. 4,999 for 75GB of 4G usage plus unlimited 4G usage at
night, and 150GB of Wi-Fi data.
There
will also be no roaming charges, across India, to any network, it was
announced. “Put an end to all voice call charges for all voice calls that are
domestic,” Ambani said. This applies to calls to other networks as well, not
just calls within the network.
He
also added that data must be affordable for all users. “Current market practice
is to charge for data a base rate between Rs. 4,000 and Rs. 10,000 – Jio will
have a base rate which is 1/10th of this,” Ambani said. “Our data plans go even
further with an effective rate of 5p/MB or Rs. 50/ GB.” Students will get 25
percent extra data on the tariffs, if they show a valid ID when signing up for
Jio.
Apart
from the data rates, Ambani also announced that the full suite of Jio apps –
for streaming movies, music, and live television – will be completely free for
all users until December 2017.
Reliance Jio Rs. 149 Plan Will Also Get Unlimited Data
Reliance Jio Rs. 149 Plan Will Also Get Unlimited Data
Although Reliance Jio announced plans last week, the company seems to be still working out what the final rates and benefits for customers will be once customers start paying for services from January 1. As of now, there are ten different plans under which you can subscribe to Jio – voice calls are free in all plans, and you pay only for the data packs. The entry level plan, Rs. 149, seemed like a bad deal at the launch since it only came with 300MB of data bundled, and no access to Reliance’s JioNet Wi-Fi network, or to the unlimited 4G usage at night (between 2AM and 5AM) that all the other plans get to use.

Now, the company has updated its plans on the Jio website, and it’s offering free night usage even for the Rs. 149 plan, and 700MB of bundled usage at Jio’s public Wi-Fi hotspots. This brings the entry level plan more in line with Jio’s other offerings, though the amount of data being offered is still very low. Even if you count the Wi-Fi access, that works out to Rs. 150 per GB, far more than you pay on any of the other Jio plans.

TOP 10 MOST EXPENSIVE CURRENCIES IN WORLD
10. Australian Dollar (AUD)
One Australian dollar buys US$0.69
The Aussie is a commodity-based currency, much like the Canadian dollar, but with the added exposure to Japan and Far East trade. 2015 was a horrendous year for the natural resource sector and that’s shown plainly enough in the currency’s value down under, but it still clinched the final spot on our top 10 most expensive currencies list.
9. Singapore Dollar (SGD)
After gaining independence in 1965, Singapore’s currency, the Singapore dollar, came into existence as a pegged currency, first to the British pound and then to the U.S. dollar. However, the currency started free floating 20 years later, giving the SGD room to run. Its value has skyrocketed as Singapore became an intellectual hub of the East. With the country beating gross domestic product (GDP) forecasts in the last two quarters, the SGD is looking strong. (Source: “TAKE A LOOK-Asia GDP: China’s Q4 growth is weakest since 2009,” Reuters, January 19, 2016.)
8. Bruneian Dollar (BND)
One Bruneian dollar buys US$0.70Brunei is a tiny nation found in Southeast Asia. Nestled between Malaysia and the South China Sea, this little country has an extremely high GDP per capita. Although the currency has fallen from its US$0.83 peak five years ago, the Bruneian dollar still packs a big punch in global forex markets.
7. Libyan Dinar (LYD)
One Libyan dinar buys US$0.74During the so-called Arab Spring, Libya was plunged into chaos. Its iron-fisted dictator, Muammar Gaddafi, was overthrown by a raging populist movement that failed to unify the country. Nonetheless, Libya’s bountiful supply of oil kept the nation’s currency in good standing. Even after the price slump in crude, it remains number seven on our list.
6. Swiss Franc (CHF)
One Swiss franc buys US$0.99
Switzerland’s famously secretive banking sector made the national currency a safe haven for international capital. The country pegged the franc to the euro when it joined the currency union, opting for a dual system rather than choosing to abolish the franc. However, it let the franc float freely last year, causing a sharp appreciation in the CHF to USD exchange rate. (Source: “Swiss Central Bank Ready To Curb Franc Gains,” The Wall Street Journal, January 13, 2016.
5. Euro (EUR)
Despite its terribly dysfunctional economic and political systems, Europe still managed to keep the euro above the U.S. dollar. It remains one of the most expensive currencies on the planet, which is tragic for anyone who likes visiting Rome or Paris. I’m personally expecting the euro to slide down the list in 2016.
4. British Pound (GBP)
One British pound buys US$1.42While the U.S. dollar gained on most currencies in the last year, the British pound ended 2015 on a positive streak. The pound sterling is still really expensive for Americans. It’s embarrassing whenever you hand a fistful of greenbacks to currency converters and only get back little more than half that quantity. It looks like poaching Mark Carney (formerly of the Bank of Canada) to run the Bank of England was a great idea for the pound.
3. Omani Rial (OMR)
One Omani rial buys US$2.60
The Middle East has been in a bind since oil prices collapsed in the summer of 2014. Quite frankly, the real issues began when oil prices were above $100.00 a barrel, giving U.S. extractors the margins to fully develop shale technology. The resulting oversupply has decimated the crude oil market, but even so, the Omani rial is still outrageously expensive at $2.60.
2. Bahraini Dinar (BHD)
One Bahraini dinar buys US$2.65
The Bahraini dinar is certainly buoyant because of its ties to Saudi Arabia and the oil market, but it has one additional factor in its column. Bahrain is the home of an American naval base that is crucial to U.S. influence in the region. Its strategic importance gives the Kingdom of Bahrain an outsize role in foreign affairs, which has also cemented its currency’s costly stature.
1. Kuwaiti Dinar (KWD)
One Kuwaiti dinar buys US$3.28The Kuwaiti dinar is another currency that benefits from crude oil, yet its history is a tangled mess. The currency first came online in 1961, valued at 1:13.33 against the Indian rupee, then went on to be measured against a basket of other currencies. They momentarily adopted the Iraqi dinar during the Gulf War and later pegged the Kuwaiti dinar to the U.S. dollar. However, it’s been free floating since 2007 and in 2013, it became the most expensive currency in the world.

3 – Nauru - 21 km²
An island nation located east of Australia, Nauru is the smallest island country in the world. Nauru is also known as the country with the most obese people in the world, with 97% of its men and 93% of women being obese or overweight. Because of this, Nauru is also home to the world's highest level of type 2 diabetes, with 40% of its population suffering from the ailment.

1 – Vatican - 0.44 km²
The world's smallest country is the Vatican, also known as the Holy See. This country fits within the Italian capital city of Rome, and is the center of the Catholic Church. It is also home to the biggest church in the world – St. Peter's Basilica, and holds some of the most significant art works of the Renaissance such as The Pieta and the Creation of Adam. Its income comes from the voluntary contributions of over 1 billion members of the Roman Catholic Church around the world. The remainder of its economy comes from the sales of postage stamps, tourist mementos, and admission fees of museums.
